I know, I know. I haven’t touched my blog in awhile. AGAIN. Well, here I am atoning for my absence with one of several listicles I have in mind. For you, dear reader, a gift – in case you haven’t planned out your holiday homebound spread yet, here’s a non-definitive list of things you can put on your table with MINIMAL moving about… the most work you will do is type with your thumbs.
Mix and match as you please, but these are all worthy contenders of vying for real estate on your table, and all are online. Eat yourself silly, because you deserve to indulge. There is no particular theme here – I mean, not many tables follow a strict theme during the holidays, right? As long as it’s festive and delish, it can make it to the table. There is something for everyone! It IS a bit top heavy on the apps, and the desserts – again, you don’t have to get it ALL (you little piggy you) or hell - JUST DO IT because why not??
And while I have your attention – guys. Stay safe ok? Don’t do anything crazy. Be vigilant. Mask up. And know that even if the holidays are not the same this year, you have your loved ones and the people you choose as your family as your greatest treasures – all the gifts you need. Even if circumstances pushed you around and made sure there is not much on the table this year, fret not – with loved ones, you are certainly rich in the ways that matter.
If you’re going to be like me, I’m celebrating in pajamas. Stay cozy, peeps. Blessed Christmas to all!
NOTE: So. I made this list in outline form… because this year, we got schooled. ALL of these guys can be found on IG – that now normal marketplace. Happy hunting! (And I hope they have food in stock! ORDER NOW!)
To Graze On
I. With Melba Toast, Pita Bread, Crudites or Crackers
- Tosta.PH Black Truffle Chicken Liver Pate + Tosta.PH Onion Jam – this guy does one product, and it’s a goody. His newest pate isn’t overly “trufflely” – which is a good thing. Onion jam is there as a counterpoint.
- LaPetiteFromagerie TnT (Taba Ng Talangka) Cheese Spread – I honestly wasn’t sure what to think when I saw this.. but yes, it works. I like it on Fita. Hehe!
- ComeryComic Salmon & Caviar Spread – Call them ASAP, as they guys have a lot of treats. This salmon and cavi spread is the most festive of them all!
- TierradeEspana Spanish charcuterie – For me, Tierra makes some of the best. Chorizos, salchichon, et al – GO!
- SaganaBGC Bistro Foie Gras Terrine – Pricey? A bit. But trust me. This is one of the best – if not THE best – foie terrine in Manila.
- Hummuseria Of 5th (aka JL Martinez 09178054256) Avenue Mushroom Hummus – This guy JL makes one thing: creamy, satisfying hummus.. and my favorite is his labor intensive mushroom one.
- PaulinoPremium Caviar Pie – This is just really well constructed, with a balance of ingredients. One of the best caviar pies I’ve tried.
II. Go Lang Ng Go
- CravewellSnacks Root Crisps paired with Dippity.Doodah Taco Dip – Cravewell knows how to make veggie chips. The root crisps are my choice among all their variants.. and they’re sturdy enough to dip into Dippity Doodah’s creations.
- Casa_Luisa French Onion Hand Pies (or Ham & Cheese!) – These pies are PRO. The crusts are amazing, and the fillings seemingly simple, but with a lot of elements in them.
- Biancabakes.PH Aussie Veggie Pie – Aussie girl making these amazing little hand pies. I love the veg one (mainly because I like veg! hehe!) but try the others too.
- DimZumPH siomai (and other dimsum) paired with Shimin.PH XO sauce – I’ve put DimZum’s dimsum on my holiday table before, and they’re always a hit! Get them frozen and simply steam. I like them with Shimin XO.. and I pretend I’m in Hong Kong when I eat it! Armchair eating indeed!
- Burrata.Naturasi.MNL Straciatella paired with Aubocassa olive oil from TxantonPH and Pangasinan sea salt from HundredIslandSeaSalt - I’m late to this party, but it’s a fun one! Naturasi makes great cheeses like Straciatella and Burrata.. you can do a lot of things to these mild cheeses (like pesto!), but simple is always good: excellent olive oil and some salt.
Salad / Vegetables / Sides
- SaganaBGC Mustard Vinaigrette on mixed greens and herbs from Herbivore_PH, or KaiFarms - To be honest, it’s hard thinking of the veg portion of this list. I like to compose my own salads, but no shame in ordering too – the greens from Herbivore are done using hydroponics and are sustainable, and the ones from Kai are some of the freshest and tastiest I’ve tried this year! Sagana’s Frenchy, mustard-y vinaigrette is a perfect accompaniment – I say put some sliced apples and nuts too.
- HolySmokesBBQPH Roasted Broccolli With Cranberries – This veg is so good I would totally gorge on just this. So well done!
Noods
I. On Top Of Spaghetti All Covered With Cheese (yeah, boil some noods!)
- Mamarins2020 Spaghetti Sauce – According to my dad, Mamarins food has “ilonggo taste” … delicious, in other words! This one is a meat sauce that has an interesting touch.. go try it for yourself!
- Kajuayan Marinara Sauce – Super clean marinara, made with love and with the intentions of helping the farmers. Glug some olive oil on it, and some tuyo! WIN! For those who want to lighten the feast a bit. Haha!
- Banzys.PH Alla Vodka Sauce – This guy surprised me with this sauce. This is his pivot after losing his job, and it’s a good one!
II. Get It Whole
- WildflourToGo Baked Lasagna – Premium for sure, and 100% lasagna! If you’re picky about your lasagna, go try this one.
- VaBenePastaDeliPH Spinach Mushroom Canneloni – Rich and decadent, and perfect for the holiday table.
- TxokoAsador Canelones de Txangurro – From one of the best openings of this crazy year comes this crab stuffed cannelloni. Go get some – don’t go too crazy, because it’s rich. But man is it worth it!
- SarsaKitchen Palabok Luglug Espesyal – Basically this is like getting a Honda Civic and making it into a street racing car. So much sahug – and it all goes perfectly!
Meats
- FelizDishDetails Beef Belly In Mushroom Gravy – THIS is a crowd pleaser at my place. A rarity both kids and adults will dig.
- ThePlazaInc NY Style Beef Pastrami paired with mustard from DoughAndGrocer - I really enjoyed this pastrami .. has enough fat to keep it from drying up. Definitely explore the premium mustard selection of Dough & Grocer and eat it with your pastrami. (But hey, no shame in Grey Poupon either!)
- GourmetFriday.MNL Picanha paired with ChiliAsylum cilantro chimichurri – This is another home biz that took me by surprise. The picanha is a very uncommon cut, but man is it flavorful. I love Chili Asylum cilantro chimi with so many things – but with this beef it is perfecto!
- Cocinalo.PH Belarria Saltsan – This super stood out to me this year: a Basque take on callos (though if we’re going to be technical about it, it’s really a stew of tender pig ears and such). Either way, it’s a winner!
- CibodeMarghi Kadyos, Baboy & Cotechino – This is the fanciest kadyos I’ve ever had… and probably the best one too… that cotechino (like a head cheese) is a game changer!
- _RinasKitchen Crispy Ulo Kare Kare – Ok this is a good home version kare kare made with peanut butter.. but it’s the crispy ulo that makes the dish. It stays crispy, and goes well with the kare kare! Not for the squeamish, though – it literally is a pig’s face! But as I always say – your curiosity will be rewarded.
Poultry
- Wok_With_Mom Eight Treasures Stuffed Chicken – These guys make super clean tasting heritage recipes, with this Pat Po Kew (Eight Treasures Chicken) arguably the star of the show. Think tender chicken stuffed with the tastiest, moistest rice mix ever. Holiday vibes, Chinoy-style!
- Viaje.ByKev Pollo ala Brasas – This was one of the latest things to catch my taste buds .. one of the tastiest roasted chickens in Manila. I’m not kidding. The flavor will smack you in the face in a good way! Don’t forget to try the sauces too, although honestly, it’s ok without it.
- HolySmokesBBQPH Peruvian Chicken Cutlet Set – The Smokes peeps serve this amazing grilled chicken and serve it with tortillas, cilantro cream and salsa. Yep, Latin American flavors rule!
- MomAndTinas Chicken Relleno – I added this because it has always been consistenly good, and for me has that nostalgic taste that has and will continue to grace holiday tables for years to come.
Seafood
- Chinamommy XO Crabs – This is ultimate indulgence, but you won’t regret it. Have the rice on the ready, get your hands dirty, and crack these flavorful crabs.
- BenedictoKitchen.PH Baked Salmon Two Ways – Here’s the thing.. I actually love baked salmon, but not when it’s baked to hell and back. The chef of Benedicto Kitchen does it right, keeping the salmon moist. With two different toppings, it will satisfy the picky eater.
- ChoompChoomp Lobster Ikura Sushi Tray – Another indulgence, but man does it hit the spot. This is like having a giant sushi bowl in front of you! Eat up!
- SaigonCornerPH Flying Sea Bass platter – I highly recommend this interactive experience form QC’s Saigon Corner: break off a bit of fried fish, wrap into their rice wrappers with, leaves, herbs, green mango, and their amazing herb sauce and nuoc nam .. and pop into your mouth. OH YES!
- SpicebirdGrill Shimp Boards with extra Piri Piri Sauce – I love me some shrimp, especially when cooked properly. When doused in Spicebird’s house sauce, it’s heavenly.
Desserts
- WorldsBestLecheFlan leche flan – One of the best I’ve tried. Creamy and luscious, and definitely indulgent!
- The.Drunk.Baker Olive Oil Cake with Berries – Ask her what she has on offer, but this olive oil cake of hers is so good with whatever it’s topped with. Fresh fruits are always a winner!
- NeedletailCoffee Orange Rum Cake with Almonds – This one is a gateway rum cake.. not too strong, but awesome because of the orange rum butter, candied orange rinds and almonds. Perfect with coffee!
- Curlytop.Treats Chocolate Contessa – Chocolate lovers and lovers of rich desserts might weep when they try this: it’s like a dark, sensuous, chocolate mouse. I put salt on it. Haha!
- GourmandiseBySunshine Choquettes – Sunshine Puey’s cream pastries are love. They even come in several variants.. but trust me, they’re all worth tucking in to!
- ShopProbinsiyana Buko Pie – This is PURE buko pie, from Laguna. And it tastes as Pinoy as Apple pie does American.
- TheThaiPlate Mango Sticky Rice Cake paired with hot chocolate using RisaChocolate - In my opinion, this is THE mango sticky rice to try.. and it will go hand in hand with some dark hot chocolate. YUMMY!
- Dr.BakeMNL Rum Cake paired with FogCityCreamery Banana Cream Pie Ice Cream – This is the true rum cake lovers.. a rummy rum cake, made from mom’s old recipe. Top it with the ice cream of your choice – I think Banana ice cream is an ace combo with rum!
- ChefIElise Honey Nut Melange & Cheese (check selection from TildeBakery of Malagos Cheeses, or from LaPetiteFromagerie who currently have a selection of Real California Cheeses) – If you want to feel a little Euro, hit up this Christmas-y honey studded with nuts and spices, and eat it with whatever cheeses tickle your fancy.
- TrueChocolatePH Dark Truffle in a jar – JUST GET A SPOON AND DIG IN. Yup, easy access! Haha!
- AlchemyByMeryl macarons – This was also one of my year’s surprises, and for some reason I think will be great on the table for the holidays. Maybe it’s because of the beautiful packaging.. or the macaron’s colors.. or their true flavors (try Coffee, Dark Caramel, even Coconut). Whatever the case may be, I am such a fan!
IF YOU’RE REALLY NOT IN THE MOOD:
- BerrysDeli bacon, EmperorsChicken chicken flakes, MomsPH tuyo, paired with TimplaArtisanalMixes spicy vinegar, crispy fried eggs, sliced tomatoes, and sinangag – If you’re not feeling up to it.. if you’re feeling blah.. well. Comfort food to the rescue. Berry’s bacon is evil and so good.. Emperor’s Chicken a taste sensation for any meal of the day.. and Mom’s just solid tuyo. This’ll make you smile, even a bit.
This was fun to make, folks! There’s SO MUCH MORE out there, but for now, I’m sure this will make your table wobble. In the meantime, pray, give thanks, and remember the reason for the season. May you find true Hope in God With us. Blessed Christmas all!
